articleTop replay FAQ / info

I've noticed that a lot of people check the top-replay box when uploading a replay, even if it's obivous (at least to everyone else) that the game isn't top. I believe that most of the replayers veterans know whether their replays are top worthy or not, but some of you might not know what a top replay is.

Below you will find a few cases that might tempt you to check the top replay box.

"I crushed this guy! I've never played better!"

Even if you played the game of your life and completely crushed your opponent, people will probably find it boring and one-sided. Top replays should be somewhat even.

"I beat a highly ranked player and I'm only in the bronze league (or any other bottom league)."

This is most likely not a top replay. Even if you played well, being in the lower leagues indicates that you are an average player, and if top player lost to you, it was either his worst game ever, or he was assasinated by the government half-way through the game.

Poor playing and mistakes does not belong among the top replays, even if it's by a top player.

"I did an amazing comeback! I thought I was gonna lose, but I turned the whole thing around!"

This replay might be entertaing to watch, but in most cases, an amazing comeback is the result of poor playing by your opponent. Your opponent probably did a few fatal mistakes. "No top for you!"

A few other tips

- Before submitting your replay, take a look a the APM (actions per minute) of the players. I've noticed that a lot of people top flag replays featuring players with 30-50 apm. Take a look at the current top replays, most of the players have an apm count of well over a hundred. I'm not saying that >100 apm means top, but 30 apm definetly does not. The aprovers will probably not even bother watching it.

- If you know you are in the lower leagues, your replay probably isn't a top replay. All our top replays feature mostly diamond league players.

- Quantitative thinking will not work here. If you upload a thousand replays and check the top box on all of them, thinking that "if I upload enough replays, one of the HAS to be approved", you will still get a thousand replays rejected. Also, if you take a chance and check the top checkbox, your replay will become unavailable to the users until it gets approved or rejected, which is a waste of time if you know that your replay isn't top worthy.

What about pro replays?

Pro replays feature at least one highly ranked diamond player. If you're not a highly ranked diamond player, your replay is not a pro replay.

These are my thoughts on top replays. I hope I made things a bit clearer to those of you who are new to Replayers.com.

  • "If you know you are in the lower leagues, your replay probably isn't a top replay. All our top replays feature diamond league players"

imo that's bullshit, lower league (platinium, gold) can make amazing game with mass fight and non stop action !

And what about replay of the week ?

  • Replay of the week does not have to be of top quality. It just has to be entertaining. It's not the best of the best.

Anyway, I don't doubt that platinum or even gold players can play top games. It was mainly aimed at players in the silver/bronze leagues with ~50 apm. But fair enough, I changed that part to "mostly diamond players". ;)

  • we need an 'awesome' or 'fun' or 'wracking the shit of each other' tab where skill doesn't mean that much.
In beta (don't have the game yet) I used to play in silver, gold and platinum so I'm just average guy and I enjoy watching fun average guy replays. There could be a button to suggest such thing and if has been pressed enough times and rating is OK it would appear in the tab. This is easy to implement, saves time for approvers and etc.

  • I agree with SmokingJesus too though, let's implement a new section, where not all replays have to be played by the top 0,5% of players time and time again. Average gamers have very cool games every so once in a while too, it would have to be fun and awesome to watch like the RotW (which reminds me, when are we going to get a new RotW?). So basicly one section with ROTW kinda games, and the ROTW reserved for a combination of pro and fun / awesomeness! Who's with me?

  • I've never agreed with the APM=Skill arguments. I've seen a lot of top replays with massive APMs, but at least half of that APM (in all parts of the game, not just the first few minutes) is usually spam-clicking, extraneous actions and just wasted effort.

There are very few replays I've watched where a >100 APM actually consisted of even a MAJORITY of useful actions (even among pro gamers).

I think an efficent, knowledgable strategic player with a ~50 APM can still put out a damn good game, and possibly even a replay worthy of a 'top' tag.
